Influencing in Uncertain Times: What Funders Need to Know
WMFN convened members on the 18th February 2026 for a timely session exploring campaigning, public engagement and political activity in an increasingly complex climate. Kirsty Mc Ewen, Partner and Head of Charity and Not for Profit, Higgs LLP delivered the session.
With local elections on the horizon, shifting public debate and heightened scrutiny of civic space, the workshop focused on what funders need to understand about current Charity Commission and Electoral Reform regulations on campaigning and lobbying by charities and civil society organisations. The session focused on practical legal insights and clarity around election-period risks. Matters such reviewing internal policies, strengthening due diligence were raised, and funders supporting charities to engage confidently without creating further divisions and tensions. Importantly, the discussion went beyond compliance. Members raised deeper questions about the role of funders in social change, leadership and safeguarding civic voice in the West Midlands.
